Product description : Cyanotype Workshop Refill

Sentosphère is committed to extending the life of our products. Want to continue your Cyanotype activity?

With the Cyanotype Workshop Refill, you can let your imagination run wild by creating your own cyanotypes!

A brief history of Cyanotype:
Cyanotype is a photographic process that produces prints or images in a dark blue color known as "Prussian blue." The name comes from the Greek "kyanos," meaning "dark blue," in reference to this characteristic color. The process involves the effect of light on two mixed chemicals: ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide. When exposed to light, the mixture oxidizes and turns blue. This technique was discovered in 1842 by English astronomer and chemist John Frederick Herschel during his studies on the effects of light. Today, the cyan blue used by printers is this same shade: 100% Cyan.

Despite its simplicity and speed, cyanotype never gained widespread popularity, though it was used by botanist Anna Atkins to reproduce tiny plants that were difficult to draw. Her herbarium, consisting entirely of cyanotype reproductions of algae, Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions, is considered the first photographic publication! There are only about twenty known copies in the world, each print made by Anna Atkins herself. Nowadays, cyanotype is primarily used for artistic and educational purposes, with contemporary artists creating beautiful works using this technique.
