The Mona Lisa, otherwise known as the Mona Lisa, was painted by Leonardo da Vinci in the early 16th century. This oil painting painted on poplar wood uses the “sfumato” technique, a vaporous effect obtained by superimposing extremely delicate layers of paint which give the painting imprecise contours. Several factors led this painting to become a true cult object: the identity of the model with the enigmatic smile and gaze was a subject of debate between specialists and Leonardo da Vinci broke the codes of the models of the time. The date it was painted is also uncertain (between 1503 and 1519). We know that Francis I acquired this painting and that it is one of the rare works that is attributed with certainty to Leonardo da Vinci. Stolen in 1911 and found in 1913, it was during this period that the painting gradually became a legend and became the model for many modern artists and then the icon we know today.
